Vitamin C – Superfood For The Skin

Vitamin C is part of the elite family of active ingredients in skincare. Any skincare specialist will recommend you use a product which contains Vitamin C in you skincare regime. It is an essential ingredient to protect cell integrity and is one of the few which have been extensively studied and deliver actual results.

Vitamin C in skincare comes in many forms with different delivery systems and shelf life. Types of  Vitamin C you may find in skin care products include:

  • Ascorbic Acid – highly unstable, hydro-soluble form of Vitamin C.
  • L-Ascorbic Acid – unstable, water-soluble form of Vitamin C.
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate – hydro-soluble and stable form of Vitamin C with better penetration rate than Ascorbic Acid and much more gentle to the skin.
  • Ascorbyl Palmitate – oil soluble form of Vitamin C.
  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate – stable form of Vitamin C.
  • Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate – highly stable form of Vitamin C, oil-soluble and high skin penetration rate.

You should carefully chose which form of Vitamin C is suitable for you as using it comes with a few issues.  Most forms of Vitamin C are unstable. Exposed to light, oxygen and heat, the unstable forms of Vitamin C will oxidise and change colour from light yellow to an orange or brown colour. Over time, the Vitamin C in a product exposed to environmental factors will degrade and lose its effectiveness. The acidic nature causes sensitivity. This is common with L-Ascorbic Acid which can trigger inflammation of the skin resulting in a burning sensation, redness and dryness, creating a huge issue for sensitive and reactive skin. Hydro-soluble forms of Vitamin C end up sitting on top of the skin instead of being absorbed into its deeper layers. This is because the lipid barrier of the skin which is oil based and stops water based products penetrating it.

oxydative stress to the cell

We prefer using a highly stable form of Vitamin C in our products like Tetrahexydecyl Ascorbate. It is deeply absorbed by the skin where it increases collagen synthesis and offers high cell protection against free radicals, increasing cell viability 50 times more than ascorbic acid. In combination with Vitamin E it offers increased anti-ageing effects.

The benefits of using Tetrahexydecyl Ascorbate on the skin :

  • Anti-ageing proprieties. Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while toning and firming the look of your skin.
  • Reduces the appearance of dark areas and brightens the skin.
  • It helps with oily skin and clogged pores.
  • Has a high rate of conversion to Vitamin C into the dermis.
  • Protects skin cells against oxidative stress from free radicals.
